Carlos Santana and keyboardist Gregg Rolie met by chance in San Francisco in 1966. The other members of the band are: Tim Frazer-guitar, Gus Rodrigues-bass, Rod Harper-drums, and Michael Carabello-congas. Their reputation began to grow when Bill Graham noticed them in 1968. He eventually became their co-manager. 1969 was the year of breakthrough by Santana following their appearance at the Woodstock Festival in New York State where they received a standing ovation for
Soul Sacrifice and which became the earliest composition to be closely identified with the group.
